Design Thinking Homework #17

When designing a protype you must go through the stages of design thinking, the first being empathize. During this stage me and my partner had to ask question about the efficiency of our wallets. We asked questions about how we could improve them, what are likes and dislikes of our current wallets are, and what style do we like most for our wallets. When discussing these I had to make sure that I was going to be able to create something that worked best for her and she had to do the same. In the book “The design of everyday things” by Don Norman mentions the importance of relating to humans he says, “It took a long time for me to realize that my understanding of human behavior was relevant to my interest in the design of technology.” That brings us to the next step where I came up with various solutions that could work for my partner. In the next step I narrowed down my ideas to the one that seemed to meet most if not all her desires. After that it was time to build the prototype which is a rough draft of what are final might look like. I used materials that were most convenient, nothing that would be apart of the final structure. The point of this is to have a tangible item that gives you a better idea of how it would look when its finalized. In the book “The Uniqueness of individual Perception” by Roger Whitehouse says, “to unearth some answers to these issues, and to evolve a final design, we first set about designing the design process itself.” Then we tested it, meaning my partner examined my prototype and pointed out problems that she would like to have fixed. The final step is to implement, and this is creating the final product, which we as a class did not get that far.
